THE UIA SPORT & LEISURE PROGRAMME
International Union of Architects
A brief history < back

The Group was established in 1959 under the title "Committee on Sporting & Educational Facilities".

Romuald Wirsyllo from Poland was an active secretary of the group for many years, whose work was highly respected. He was succeeded by another Polish architect, Jacek Kwiecinski.

In 1986 the secretaryship was given to the current holder, Geraint John of the United Kingdom.

After 1986, the Group has had its title modified several times. Its title of Sports & Leisure Work Group was changed to "Sports, Leisure & Tourism". However, "Tourism" was subsequently omitted and the title changed to its current title "The UIA Sport & Leisure Programme". The role of Permanent Secretary was changed to "Director" and this post continues to be held by Professor Geraint John.
